abstract | Cpds. R1(COOR)n (I) (where R' is an opt. substd mono- or di-valent aromatic gp. R is an opt. substd. mono valent aromatic gp. and n is 1 or 2, where if n = 2, the two COOR gps. are present in m- or p-posn.), pref. di-(4-nitrophenyl)-terephthalate and -isophthalate are useful as plasticisers for plastics and rubbers intermediates for polyesters and polyamide prodn. and raw materials or auxiliaries in pharmaceuticals industry. They are prepd. by reacting R'(CCl3)n (II), phenols ROH (III) and water, with cleavage of HCl, at 80-250 degrees C, esp. 100-180 degrees C, opt. in presence of catalysts, and using (II):(III):H2O mole ratio of 1:(:( to 1:3n:n. Pref. catalysts are Friedel-Crafts catalysts esp. ZnCl2, pref. used in 0.01-2, esp 0.05-0.5 wt.% concn. w.r.t (II). |
