abstract | Cross-linked polycarboxylic acids, for thickening ointments and textile printing pastes. These acids are produced by precipitation copolymerisation of olefinically unsatd. polymerisable carboxylic acids (esp. acrylic acid) with 1-5 wt. % (referred to total monomers) of divinyldioxan as diolefinic crosslinking agent, in liquid, readily volatile inert hydrocarbon. These copolymers are insol. in water but, when neutralised with base (e.g. NH3), form clear, stable and structureless gels in water, even in very low concentration, which are resistant to hydrolysis. |
