abstract | Mild esterification procedure An acid, an alcohol and a catalyst (pref. 0.02-1 mole) are mixed in a (cyclo)-aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent boiling between 10 and ca. 100 degrees C, at below the boiling point, (esp 0-40 degrees C). An almost quantitative yield of ester is isolated from the lighter phase after phase separation. Advantages are (a) stoichiometric quantities (b) water does not have to be removed azeotropically or by a drying agent (c) low energy requirement (d) pure product without traces of toxic solvents (e) mild conditions suitable for sensitive reagents e.g. tertiary alcohols, allylic alcohols or MeOH. |
