titleOfInvention In vitro study of influence of active groups - of cancer
abstract The method provides a rapid and certain method of measuring the carcinogenic activity of lack of B-vitamins and of their anti-carcinogenic effect. It is based on the fact that while both respiration and fermentation break down carbohydrates to pyruvic acid, thereafter fermentation hydrogenates this to lactic acid while respiration oxidises it to acetic acid. The respiration and fermentation of isolated 10-day chick embryo cells prepd. with Trypsin is measured in the absence and presence of vitamin B1. A culture of the embryonal cells is subcultured and the respiration and fermentation measured in the presence and absence of vitamin B1 by measuring the H pressure at intervals by the manometric method. From the results the amt. of lactic acid formed is calcd. Addn. of 0.25 mu g/ml. vitamin B1 can reduce the amt. from 36.5 to 93.1 mm3.
