abstract | A method for producing a solution of high molecular weight polymers of conjugated dienes in a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon by anionically polymerizing the diene in the presence of an alkyl lithium as a catalyst is described, as well as a method for producing impact resistant polymers of vinyl aromatic compounds. The process consists in first polymerizing the diene in solution in an aromatic hydrocarbon, which is free of ethylenic double bonds, to a molecular weight below about 10 5, then adding a trialkylaluminum in molar excess over the alkyl lithium, the solution obtained with the diluted vinyl aromatic compound and then couples the polydiene with a polyepoxide or an alkyl (meth) acrylate to a high molecular weight polymer. The solution thus obtained is further processed into an impact-resistant polymer of a vinylaromatic hydrocarbon in which the solution prepared as described is polymerized in a manner known per se, if appropriate after addition of further amounts of a vinylaromatic compound. |
