titleOfInvention Method for determining the geometry of a raw cylinder head casting and device
abstract The invention relates to a method of collecting data representative of the geometry of a raw cylinder head cast 32 to provide a cast scan coordinate system for use with a machining coordinate system that employs a locator 48 using a non-contact scan operation. The cylinder head molding 32 includes horizontal and planar cast localization marks 44 and vertical cast localization marks 46. Planar data corresponding to the planar cast localization marks 44 are determined by scanning planar surfaces of the device. Vertical data corresponding to the vertical cast localization marks 46 are determined using localization marks 44 located on the planar surface of the device and located at predetermined positions between vertical cast localization marks 46. A transformation matrix that creates a relationship between the scan coordinate system and the machining coordinate system can then be determined based on the planar data so that virtual machining can be performed in predicting the volume of a machined cylinder head.
