titleOfInvention Process for finishing ionic ceramic surfaces
abstract A method of surface finishing covalent ionic ceramics comprising: (a) repeatedly grinding a finishing medium against a free surface of the ceramic, the medium consisting of an ionically bonded oxide with grains that are harder than the grains of the covalently ionically bonded ceramic; (b) interrupting grinding frequently to straighten the medium with a single point diamond tool; (c) Continue the repeated grinding, with directional interruptions of steps (a) and (b), until a surface roughness of approximately 0.04 micrometers Ra has been achieved on the ceramic and the free surface of the ceramic contains an ionic residue of the finishing medium. A method for effecting reduced friction between lubricated friction surfaces is also proposed, comprising: (a) forming a silicon nitride-based ceramic friction surface with a polished surface roughness of about 0.04 micrometers Ra with an ionic residue thereon resulting from the finishing with the ionically bonded oxide with grains that are harder than the grains of silicon nitride based ceramics; and (b) rubbing the silicon nitride rubbing surface against the other rubbing surface while the intermediate layer between the rubbing surfaces is lubricated with oil in a mixed hydrodynamic process, whereby the ionic residue reacts with the additives in the lubricating oil so that a transfer film on the ceramic is applied. .
