Disclosed are a curtain coating method and apparatus in which, during high speed coating, the rolls are prevented from being soiled, coating defects occur, and that air streams entrained along the web surface are formed so that a stable coating can be performed. In the apparatus in which a curtain film falling perpendicularly from a coater head is brought into contact with a continuously traveling web to form a coating layer, the coater head is of an extrusion type. The apparatus is equipped for receiving coating liquid of the curtain film, before coating is started and before a coating is stopped, with a liquid collecting tray and a movable air regulating device operatively connected to the liquid collecting tray. In addition, the method is characterized in that a coating is performed while the distance between the air regulating device and the liquid collecting trough is set to a specific value. The method is further characterized in that the supply amount of coating liquid is reduced to a normal amount or less before coating is started or before a coating is stopped. |
