abstract | Binders for casting molds and cores obtained by dissolving a resin made from an aliphatic or cyclic aldehyde and an aliphatic or cyclic ketone in furfuryl alcohol. Process for preparing a metal casting mold or core comprises: (a) reacting an aliphatic or cyclic aldehyde having at least 2 C with an aliphatic or cyclic ketone to form a resin component; (b) dissolving the resin component in a co-reactive solvent consisting essentially of furfuryl alcohol; (c) mixing the resulting binder with the mold-forming material; and (d) hardening the binder/mould-forming material mixture in the presence of an acid catalyst. Independent claims are included covering: (i) mold forming material/binder mixtures made by mixing a mold-forming material with a binder and (ii) casting molds and cores made by hardening the mold forming material/binder mixtures in the presence of an acid catalyst. |
