abstract The spectrometer includes a radiation source (22), a focal plane field detector (32), an internal reflection element (10) with a contact area (20) which engages with a sample (18) to be examined, and a wavelength-selective element, such as an interferometer, which absorbs radiation proceeding between the radiation source and the focal plane field detector, to cause a selective modulation of the absorbed radiation. A device (26) is provided for controlling and concentrating radiation from the source through the rear surface area of the internal reflection element in the direction of the contact area, so that an angle of incidence of an input beam at the front surface area is equal or larger than a critical angle for the internal reflection element. A device (28) is provided for collecting reflected radiation from the contact area and for imaging the reflected radiation on the focal plane field detector.
