A liquid crystalline medium is based on a mixture of certain polar compounds having negative dielectric anisotropy. A liquid crystalline medium (I) is based on a mixture of polar compounds having negative dielectric anisotropy and contains a compound of formula (1) and (2). An Independent claim is included for an electro-optical device having an active matrix address based on ECB (electrically controlled birefringence) and containing (I) as the dielectric. R<1>, R<2>, R<3> = 1-18 C alkyl or alkenyl, optionally containing -O-, -S- or -C equivalent to C- and optionally substituted by CN or F; rings A and B = trans 1,4-cyclohexylene containing -O- and/or -S-, 1,4-phenylene, optionally substituted by N, CN or F, 1,4-cyclohexenylene, 1,4-bicyclo-(2,2,2)-octylene, piperidine-1,4-diyl, napthalene-2,6-diyl, decahydronapthalene-2,6-diyl or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronapthalene-2,6-diyl; o = 1 or 2; p = 0 or 1; L = H or F. |
