abstract A vacuum switch has a vacuum-tightly sealed ceramic (preferably porcelain) insulating cylinder with axially displaceable bottom and top contact pins which are provided with facing switch contact pieces and which are enclosed by vacuum-tight metal bellows, metallic (preferably non-magnetic steel) control electrodes being arranged concentrically to the contact pins in the switch-on and switch-off positions of the contact pieces. The novelty is that the facing potential rings of the control electrodes (5, 10), in the form of annular toroidal regions (6, 11), are coated with an insulating highly heat resistant material, preferably Al2O3, ZrO2 or TiO2. Preferably, an intermediate layer of low conductivity and high heat resistance material, e.g. Al2O3/TiNx, Al2O3/TiCx or Al2O3/TiCyNx, is provided between the coating and the control electrode metal base.
