titleOfInvention Process for the decontamination of solids contaminated with mercury
abstract The contaminated solids are heated to 350-500 deg C and the gases evolved containing Hg and other pollutants are combusted to decompose any combustible components. The flue gas from this is scrubbed with an acidic hypochlorite solution to oxidize the Hg. Insoluble Hg compounds are precipitated and separated using a precipitation agent. Preferred features: The waste gas from heating the solids contains 1 vol.% Hg. Following combustion the flue gas is cooled and passed through a filter. There are 2 scrubbing stages. The pH of the scrubbing solution is 2. The precipitation agent (preferably a sulfide or a thiocarbamate) is added to the solutions produced from the 1st and 2nd scrubbing stages. Before release the scrubbed flue gas is passed through a carbon adsorber.
