abstract | A rare earth catalyst is supported on an inert organic polymer having a particle size of 1 microns -2 mm, a specific surface area of at least 0.5 m<2>/g and a pore volume of 0.1-15 ml/g. A catalyst (I) comprises: (A) one or more rare earth compounds consisting of an alcoholate, carboxylate, a rare earth complex with a diketone or an addition compound of a rare earth halide with an oxygen, sulfur, phosphorous or nitrogen donor compound of formula (1)-(4); (B) one or more organoaluminum compounds, consisting of an aluminum trialkyl, a dialkyl aluminum hydride or an open chain or cyclic aluminoxane of formula (5)-(8); (C) one or more Lewis acids; (D) an inert organic polymer having a particle size of 1 micron-2 mm, a specific surface area of at least 0.5 m<2>/g and a pore volume of 0.1-15 ml/g; and (E) a conjugated diene. Independent claims are included for: (i) a process for the preparation of (I) by mixing (A)-(D) and optionally (E) in an inert organic solvent and/or diluent at -20 to100 deg C in any order followed by separation of the solvent and/or diluent; (ii) a process for the polymerization of conjugated dienes in the gas phase using (I). (R<1>-O)3M (I) (R<2>-COO)3M (II) (R<3>-CO-C(R<4>R<5>)-CO-R<6>)3M (III) MX3<.>y donor (IV) AlR<7>2 (V) HAlR<8>2 (VI) M = a trivalent rare earth (number 57-71 of the Periodic system); R<1>-R<6> = 1-20C alkyl, 1-20C alkenyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl, 7-10C aralkyl or 6-14C aryl whereby R<4>, R<5> may be H; R<7>-R<1>0=1-12C (cyclo)alkyl; X = Cl, Br or I; donor = O, S, P or N donor compound; y = 1-6 |
