abstract A method for the preparation of alpha -methylene- beta -methyl- psi -butyrolactone of formula (I) comprises the oxidation of alpha -methylene-3-methyl-4-hydroxybutyraldehyde of formula (II) and/or the tautomer 2-hydroxy-3-methylene-4-methyltetrahydrofuran of formula (III) in the presence of an oxidising agent and then carry out a cyclisation reaction to form (I): HO-CH2-CH(CH3)-C(=CH2)-CHO (II) Also claimed is the preparation of (I) by esterification of 2-methylene-3-methyl-4-acetoxybutyric acid of formula (IV) to form (I) by ring formation: AcO-CH2-CH(CH3)-C(=CH2)-CO2H (IV)
