abstract | A conjugated diene polymer (I) is selectively hydrogenated by bringing (I) in an inert organic solvent into contact with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst combination comprising a bis(cyclopentadienyl) transition metal compound (II) and a lithium compound (III). (I) is a homopolymer, a copolymer of two or more conjugated dienes or a copolymer of a conjugated diene and a vinyl aromatic compound. (II) has the formula (Cp)2M, where each Cp is cyclopentadienyl optionally substituted by 1-8C alkyl or alkoxy, 6-8C aryl or aryloxy, 6-8C cycloalkyl or cycloalkoxy, 1-5C hydroxyalkyl, aldehyde, carboxyl or silyl and M is cobalt, nickel, rhodium, palladium, platinum or iridium. (III) is lithium hydride or an organic lithium compound of the formula RLi or RLi2, where R is 1-30C hydrocarbyl or a polymeric moiety. The molar ratio of Li:M is 0.1-100:1. |
