Modified polyolefins with a gel content are obtained by reacting the modified (co)polymer with a hydrolyzed oganosilane and an alpha , beta -unsaturated dicarboxylic acid under the action of ionizing radiation, optionally with subsequent heat treatment. Modified polyolefins and/or olefin copolymers in the form of particles, semi-finished products and/or molding materials, with a gel content of 1-80 wt%, obtained by reacting the modified (co)polymer with 0.5-20 (preferably 1-6) wt% of a mixture of 30-50 mol% hydrolyzed organosilane compound and 70-50 mol% alpha , beta -unsaturated dicarboxylic acid (or acid derivative) under the action of ionizing radiation with an absorbed dose of 0.05-1.5 Mrad at 5-100 deg C, possibly with further thermal treatment at above the melting or softening point (T) of the polymer. The (co)polymer used may also contain 0.01-2.5 wt% stabilizers, 0.1-1 wt% antistatics, 0.2-3 wt% pigments, 0.05-1 wt% nucleating agents, 5-40 wt% fillers and/or reinforcing substances and/or 0.01-1 wt% processing aids. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of these modified polyolefins with a gel content of 10-80 wt%, comprising (a) melt-compounding the polymer or mixing the solid polymer with 1-20 wt% of a mixture of ethylenically-unsaturated hydrolyzed silane and unsaturated diacid (as above), (b) melting and homogenising the mixture and processing it as a semi-finished or moulded product and (c) irradiating the (semi)finished product with a dose of 0.1-1.5 (preferably 0.2-1.0) Mrad at 5-85 (preferably 15-45) deg C.The (co)polymer has a particle diameter of 0.02-6 mm and may contain additives etc. as above. |
