abstract | The production of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) involves: (i) oxidising p-xylene and methyl p-methylbenzoate (MMB) in an oxidation reactor in the presence of heavy metal catalyst; (ii) removing p-xylene and low-boiling constituents by stripping; (iii) esterifying the stripped oxidation product with methanol (MeOH) in an esterification column; and (iv) distillation to separate the reaction mixture into MMB, DMT and distillation residue. The MeOH is used for stripping the oxidation product. |
