abstract A novel nucleic acid sequence (A) includes a sequence encoding a plant cysteine protease (PCP), which (a) encodes a given sequence of 365 aminoacids (designated SEQ ID No. 2), (b) includes the coding region of a given sequence of 1286 bases (designated SEQ ID No. 1), (c) encodes a polypeptide encoded by the cDNA insertion in DSM 11692, (d) includes the coding region included in the cDNA insertion in DSM 11692 or (e) contains a strand hybridising with a sequence as in (a)-(d), has a coding region showing over its whole length a homology of at least 70% with the coding region of SEQ ID No. 1 and encodes PCP. Also claimed are e.g. vectors containing (A), genetically modified host cells, preparation of PCP by culturing the cells, proteins (B) encoded by (A), antibodies against (B) and transgenic plant cells and plants.
