abstract New amphiphilic polymers (I) are based on acetal-modified oligo-/polyesters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids and have a molecular weight of 500-100000. (I) have the empirical formula (CAP)x(T)z(I)q(D)r()s(En)t(A)y(PG)v (I); (CAP) = end groups selected from (a) sulfoaroyl, (b) groups of formula MO3-S-(O)u-(CH2)p-(RO)w- (II); (c) poly(oxy)ethylene) monoalkyl ether groups with 1-24C alkyl groups and 2-200 oxyethylene units, (d) 4-40C acyl and aroyl, (e) 2-25C hydroxyacyl and hydroxyaroyl and/or (f) poly(oxyalkylene) monoalkylphenol ether with 6-18C alkyl and 0-80 oxyalkylene units; M = a metal or optionally substituted ammonium ion; u = 0 or 1; p = 0-100; x = 0-2; (T) = arylenedicarbonyl; z = 0-50; (I) = an internal anionic group; q = 0-30; (D) = an acetal group; r = over 0 to 80; (P) = a polyol group with >= 3 hydroxyl (OH) groups; s = 0-80, such that the polyol is less than 30 mol% of the total monomer units; (En) = a poly(oxyalkylene)oxy group with 2-100 oxyalkylene groups containing 2-6 C; t = 0-25; (A) = 2-24 C 1,n-alkylenedicarbonyl; y = 0-15; (PG) = oxypropyleneoxy; v = 0-80 .
