titleOfInvention | Segmented polyolefins |
abstract | Segmented polyolefins with high strength and toughness (I), obtained by reacting mixtures of (A) 80-99 wt% polyolefin powder with a particle size of 0.001-2 mm and (B) 20-1 wt% polyolefin granules with a particle size of 2-8 mm with (C) unsaturated monomers in continuous mixers in a multi-stage process. Component (A) comprises propylene homopolymers and/or copolymers of propylene with 2-18C alpha -olefins, ethylene polymers, polybutene-1, poly-4-methylpentene-1, or mixtures thereof, and component (B) comprises ethylene polymers, ethylene-propylene (E/P) copolymers, copolymers of (E) and 4-18C alpha -olefins, E/P- diene terpolymers, E/butadiene/styrene terpolymers, propylene block copolymers or mixtures. The process comprises (a) solid-phase reaction of mixtures of (A) and (B) at 100-40 deg C below the melting or softening pt. (Tm) of the polyolefins with (C) 5-30 wt% (meth)acrylic acid, (meth)acrylonitrile, 4-21C acrylate esters, 5-22C methacrylate esters, styrene, mono-(1-12C alkyl or alkoxy)-styrenes, di-(1-6C alkyl)-styrenes, monohalo- styrenes, styrene-carboxylic acid 1-11C alkyl esters and/or 4-21C dicarboxylic acid anhydrides in presence of 0.05-0.85 wt% (based on polyolefin) acyl peroxide, alkyl peroxide, hydroperoxide, peroxycarbonate and/or perester, (b) solid-phase reaction of the modified product from (a) at 60-20 deg C below Tm with 0.5-20 wt% (meth)acrylonitrile, 5-22C methacrylate esters, styrene or styrene derivatives as above, 5-14C vinylsilanes, 6-15C acrylate- silanes, vinylpyridine, vinyloxazoline, isopropenyloxazoline, vinylpyrrolidone, amino-(1-8C alkyl) (meth)acrylates, 3-20C vinyl ethers or hydroxy-(1-8C alkyl) (meth)acrylates and optionally 0.1-5 wt% divinylbenzene (DVB), allyl (meth)acrylate, 8-14C diacrylates, 9-15C dimethacrylates, 12-17C acrylate esters of polyalcohols and/or 15-21C methacrylate esters of polyalcohols, (c) solid-phase/melt reaction of the product from (b) (transition stage) at from 40 deg C below Tm to 40 deg C above Tm with 0.1-5 wt% polyunsaturated monomer such as DVB, butadiene, isoprene, di- (meth)acrylates as above, polyalcohol (meth)acrylates as above and/or 9-22C bis-maleimides, and (d) melt-homogenisation by known methods at 15-130 deg C above Tm, optionally with the addition of 0.01-45 wt% auxiliary substances. Stage (b) and/or (c) and/or (d) may also be carried out with the addition of 1-40 wt% (based on total polyolefin) of other polymer granules selected from polystyrenes, SBS block copolymers, SEBS block copolymers, SIS block copolymers, EP rubbers, EPDM rubbers, polyamides, polyethylene or polybutylene terephthalate, polycarbonates, polyphenylene oxides, liquid crystalline polymers, polyethylene and/or polypropylene glycols, or oligo-ethylene and/or oligo- propylene glycols. Also claimed is the above process for the production of (I). |
