New soluble linear or branched polyarylene sulphoxides (I). (I), contains arylene sulphoxide units (Ar-SO; Ar = arylene) and have a degree of oxidation of 20-80%. Preferably prepared by homogeneous partial oxidation of polyarylene sulphide with dinitrogen tetroxide in inert medium at -30 to 150 deg C. In particular, poly-1,4-phenylene sulphide is 50-70% oxidised at 0-30 deg C. |
