titleOfInvention | Process for converting dibenzyl ether into benzyl chloride and producing pure hydrochloric acid from hydrochloric acid waste water from the synthesis of benzyl alcohol |
abstract | Conversion of dibenzyl ether (DBE) into benzyl chloride (BCl) comprises heating DBE with aqueous hydrochloric acid in the absence of catalyst. Also claimed is a process for the purification and concentration of dilute HCl containing organic impurities arising from the hydrolysis of BCl to benzyl alcohol (BA), in a conventional adsorber using HCl gas. During concentration in the absorber, DBE is converted into BCl and distilled off together with any BA. Some or all of the more concentrated HCl obtained (possibly still containing too much organic impurity) is taken off from the highest b.pt. zone (103-108 deg C) in absorber column A (corresponding to an HCl concentration of 18-22%) and fed into a second column (B) in which the rest of the organic components are converted into BCl and removed by distillation, and the aqueous HCl bottom product is returned to column A for further HCl absorption. |
