titleOfInvention | Process for polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers |
abstract | Alkenically unsaturated monomer(s) are polymerised in an aqueous medium in the presence of a free-radical initiator which has the formula where A is a 2-20C divalent (cyclo)aliphatic or aromatic group in which 2 or 3 carbon atoms are present between the two carbonyl groups, or it may have the formula R2-C-R3, n = 1 or 2, R1 is a 4-20C mono- or di-valent (cyclo)aliphatic group in which a carbon atom linked to a peroxy oxygen atom is a tertiary carbon atom, and R2 and R3 are C not > 12 (cyclo)aliphatic or aromatic groups, or may together form a cyclic group. The preparation in known way of these peresters in which A is R2 - C - R3 is also claimed. Polymerisation may be at lower temperatures than are generally used, and may be in alkaline systems. Control of the polymerisation is easier. |
