abstract Surfactant compositions containing one or more compounds of formula (I). R = CH2OH, CH2OR', CH2OCH2CH2(OCH2CH2)0-8, COOH, COOR', COOCH2Q, CONR1R2, CONR1CH2Q, CONR1CH(CH2OH)Q, COO<->, COOM or COON(R1)4; M = alkali metal or \2 alkaline earth metal cation; R' = 1-8C alkyl; R1, R2 = H or 1-8C alkyl; one of R3, R4 = OH and one of R5, R6 = OH; and the other of R3-R6 = R"; R" = OCH2Q, N<+>R1R2CH2Q, N<+>R1R2CH(CH2OH)Q, NR1CH2Q, NR1CH(CH2OH)Q or NR1COQ; Q = polyol, where the -CH2Q, -CH(CH2OH)Q and -COQ groups are derived from an at least 5C mono- or oligo-saccharide (S); when R3 and R4 = N<+>R1R2CH2Q or N<+>R1R2CH(CH2OH)Q then a counterion of formula RCOO<-> or another counterion is present; n = 1 and m = 4; or n = 0 and m = 6. (I) are new, provided that (1) R is not CH2OH; and (2) R" is not OCH2Q of formula OCH2(CHOH)4CH2OH, derived from sorbitol. Also claimed are methods for preparation of (I) from epoxidised 9-octadecenoic acid (A1) or epoxidised 9,12-octadecadienoic acid (A2) by (a) reaction of (A1) or (A2) with (a1) one or more polyols (II) derived from a reducing (S) by reduction of the hemi-acetal or hemi-ketal to an alcohol, or by reaction with a 1-8C alcohol to give the full acetal or ketal or (a2) one or more non-reducible at least 12C oligosaccharides, to give (I; R = R" = OCH2Q); (b) reaction of (A1) or (A2) one or more polyolamines obtained by reductive amination of the hemi-acetal or -ketal groups of (S) using NHR1R2, to give (I; R" = N<+>R1R2CH2Q, N<+>R1R2CH(CH2OH)Q, NR1CH2Q or NR1CH(CH2OH)Q; or (c) reaction of (A1) or (A2) with NHR1R2 and reacting the product with (c1) one or more reducible (S) in presence of a reducing agent to give (I) as in (b), or (c2) a glyconic acid lactone obtained by oxidation of (S) to give (I; R" = NR1COQ).
