Active material for an electrode comprises a double hydroxy carbonate containing 1-40 atom %, based on the weight of nickel, of an element of group III B in solid solution, and 1-20 wt.%, based on the weight of the double hydroxide carbonate of a conductivity reinforcer made of cobalt and/or a cobalt compound. Also claimed is a nickel electrode containing a porous nickel current collector and the above active material filling its pores. Preferably the double hydroxycarbonate has formula: Ni1-2xM2x(OH)2(CO3)x.nH2O, where x = 0.05-0.2; n =n 0.05-4; M = Al, G, In and/or Tl. The cobalt compound is beta -Co(OH)2, beta -Co(OH)2 or CoO. |
