abstract |
A process is claimed for the production of silver bromide-iodide (Ag(Br,I)) emulsions with layered grains, in which a layer (I), which is neither the core nor the outermost layer, has a silver iodide (AgI) content at least 5 mole% higher than that of the core and outermost layer. During precipitation of layer (I), a thioether of formula R11-S-L1-S-L2-NHCONH-R12 (II) is added to the precipitation solution in an amount of 0.5-25 mg/mole silver halide (AgX) of the total emulsion. In (II), R11 is a monovalent group linked through an aliphatic carbon (C) atom; R12 is hydrogen (H) or a monovalent group; L1 and L2 are each divalent groups linked through aliphatic C atoms; the chain length between the sulphur (S) atoms and between the second S atom and the urea grouping is 2-3 and the sum of the C atoms in R11, R12, L1 and L2 is no more than 12. |
