abstract Bilirubin-containing standard serum (III) is claimed. (III) contains a compound of formula (I) and/or (II). R1, R2 = H, OH, 1-8C alkyl, COOR5, SO3R5; R3 = H, OH; R4 = H, COOR5, COR5, SO3R5; R5 = H or 1-6C alkyl; R' = H, halogen, 1-6C alkyl; and R" = H, 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy. Also claimed are (1) the use of (I) and/or (II) to stabilise bilirubin in solutions; (2) production of (III) by adding (I) and/or (II) to a standard serum containing bilirubin; (3) determination of bilirubin by measuring bilirubin in a sample, measuring bilirubin in (III), and calculating the concentration from the measurements; (4) a method of increasing the storage stability of standard and control sera by adding (I) and/or (II); and a kit for measuring bilirubin in samples, containing (III).
