titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of aromatic polycarboxylic acids, in particular terephthalic acid |
abstract | P-xylene and/or p-toluic acid is oxidised by air or O2 in 10-50 moles. pref. 25 moles, aliphatic carboxylic acid e.g. acetic acid, and an anhydride e.g. acetic anhydride, in the presence of Co(0.0003-0.02 pref. 0.003 mole per mole solvent) and Br at 90-130 degrees C pref. 120 degrees C followed by treatment with 0.5-5% pref. 1-3% HNO3 at 150-250 degrees C pref. 180-190 degrees C. Similarly other subst benzenes give polycarboxylic acids. Low Co and HNO3 concs give very pure product, suitable for preparing synthetic fibres. |
