The prodn. of a solid polymer-electrolyte fuel cell comprises (A): (1) dispersing a carbon powder-supported precious metal catalyst (I) in an organic solvent (II), (2) mixing the dispersion obtd. with an alcoholic soln. of solid polymer electrolyte (III) to give colloidal (III) and a mixed soln. in which the colloid is adsorbed on the carbon, (3) forming an electrode by coating one side of a gas diffusion layer with the mixed soln., and (4) pressing the electrode onto at least one side of a solid polymer electrolyte membrane to combine these elements. Also claimed is another process (B) for the prodn. of such a fuel cell, comprising: (1) making a colloidal dispersion of (III) by mixing an organic solvent (II) with an alcoholic soln. of (III), (2) adding supported catalyst (I) to give a mixed soln. as in (A), (3) adding a fluoropolymer-treated carbon powder (IV) to provide a water repellent effect, and (4)/(5) carrying out stages (3) and (4) as in process (A). |
