abstract | Preparation of glyoxals by the oxidative dehydration of a glycol at 400-700 deg C in the presence of a silver-based catalyst. The catalyst contains at least one element from the group of gold, platinum, rhodium and palladium as well as phosphorus or a phosphorus compound. Also claimed is the catalyst. Pref. glycol is ethylene glycol or 1,2-propylene glycol, and the glyoxals provided are glyoxal or methylglyoxal. The catalyst contains 0.05-10 ppm of phosphorus, on the basis of the glycols. The catalyst contains 0.001-10 wt.% of the element, on the basis of the silver. The catalyst is in the form of silver coated with the element, or as an alloy of silver and the element. The catalyst has a carrier, pref. silica, alumina, zirconia, silicon nitride or silicon carbide. |
