(Substituted) hydrocarbons and polyolefins are fluorinated with gaseous fluorine in the presence of an alkali metal fluoride. Polyolefin may be polyethylene, with mol. wt. 10,000-200,000 or paraffin wax. Ratio of fluoride in catalyst: polyolefin is at least 0.1:1. Suitable catalysts are LiF, NaF or KF, pref. in a finely divided state i.e. a particle size of 20-325 mesh and pref. dispersed throughout the material to be fluorinated. The reaction takes place at -20 deg. to 100 deg.C. The fluorine is suitably diluted with an inert gas diluent. As water proofing agents and lubricants. |
