abstract The furnace comprises a housing (10), a melt chamber (31,32,33), a passage (30) for metal blocks connected to the melt chamber, and a top wall (34) forming, jointly with the housing (10), the melt chamber. The top wall (34) has an inclined surface (10h) which is in contact with the melt when the chamber (31,32,33) is filled up to a predetermined level (16). After the melt chamber is filled up to the level (16), inert gases are introduced, causing oxides in the melt to be driven to the surface.
