Process for the production of Truxen |
abstract |
Indene is converted to alpha- and beta-truxene isomers by reaction with an aromatic p-dicarbonyl cpd., or pref a reduced form thereof, and a catalytic amount of an aliphatic tertiary amine, under reflux conditions, while removing water formed. Both alpha- and beta-isomers are useful as binders for preparing amorphous or graphite C by coking or graphitising but beta-truxene polymerises to graphitisable polymers while alpha-truxene yields amorphous C on coking. |
