RhH(CO)(PR3)3 or RRH(CO)(PR3)2 (R is substituted or unsubstituted aryl, alkyl or aralkyl, equal or different radicals) are used. Specifically RhH(CO)(PPh3)3 for conversion of alpha-alkenes up to C12 (specifically C5, C6, C7, C12) to aldehydes. Advantages are (1) better ratio of straight to branched chains in the product: 95% n-aldehyde from 1-alkene; (2) the catalyst is easily prepared, air need not be excluded; (3) almost unlimited stability in air; (4) reactions can be carried out at room temperature and atmospheric pressure; (5) product aldehyde (or alcohol) may be used as reaction medium, saving separation process time. |
