titleOfInvention Battery separator for a rechargeable alkaline system
abstract Separators for alkaline batteries consisting of a metal sulphide (CdS, NiS, PbS, FeS or HgS), a thermoplastic resin binder, and an ion-exchange resin (polymethacrylic acid). The binder may be polyethylene, ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer or styrene-butadiene copolymer, water-soluble ethylene oxide polymers may also be added to increase plasticity. The metal sulphides in the separators react with active metal ions and colloidal particles present in the electrolyte and insolubilise them. Separators in which the ion exchange resin is 15-60% of the separator composition.
