titleOfInvention Process for the purification of crude bis (ss-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate
abstract Crude bis(beta-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) is purified by (1) dissolving in a hot aromatic solvent to a concentration higher than the saturation solubility of the ester at the apparat melting point (Tm) of BHET in the solvent; the solvent is at a temp. higher than Tm, (2) cooling the solution very rapidly to below Tm so that the precipitate is not granular or lumpy, and (3) separating off the solid. Impurities are removed which retard the polycondensation of the ester and discolour the polymer and lower its melting point. Recrystallisation processes using other solvents, e.g. water (US. 3,062,862) and polar organic solvent (US. 3,120,560 and 3,268,575) are complicated by the high solubility of the ester in these solvents at ambient temp.
