There is provided a positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, the active material including a lithium-transition metal compound oxide containing lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese, having a layered structure, a ratio D 50 /D SEM from 1 to 4 and a ratio of moles of nickel to total moles of nonlithium metals greater than 0.8 and less than 1, a ratio of moles of cobalt to total moles of nonlithium metals of less than 0, 2, having a ratio of a moles of manganese to the total moles of metals other than lithium of less than 0.2 and a ratio of the moles of manganese to the sum of the moles of cobalt and the moles of manganese of less than 0.58. |
