Methods, devices, controls and algorithms for operating an internal combustion engine are described, at least some ignition opportunities using low-temperature gasoline combustion (LTGC). Other ignition opportunities can be skipped or use a different type of combustion, such as spark ignition. The type of each ignition opportunity is determined dynamically during engine operation, often per ignition opportunity. Ignitions using LTGC produce little or no nitrogen oxides in the exhaust stream, and some implementations may not require an aftertreatment system to remove them from the exhaust stream. |
