titleOfInvention | Ion inlet / outlet means |
abstract | A method of introducing and ejecting ions to / from an ion inlet / outlet device (4) is disclosed. The ion inlet / outlet device (4) has at least two arrays of electrodes (20, 22). The device is operated in a first mode, wherein DC potentials are applied in a first direction sequentially to successive electrodes of at least one of the electrode assemblies (20, 22) so that a potential barrier moves in the first direction along the at least one array and ions in the first direction in and / or out of the device drives. The device is operated in a second mode wherein DC potentials are applied in a second, different direction sequentially to successive electrodes of at least one of the electrode assemblies (20, 22) such that a potential barrier moves in the second direction along the at least one array and ions in the second direction into and / or out of the device. The device provides a single, relatively simple apparatus for manipulating ions in multiple directions. For example, the apparatus may be used to charge ions in a first direction into or eject ions from an ion mobility separator, and then may be used to cause ions to move through the ion mobility separator in the second direction to cause that the ions separate. |
