titleOfInvention Method for generating or amplifying a plurality of wavelengths of laser radiation in a single optical cavity
abstract It is an object of the present invention to provide a laser source which can simultaneously provide different wavelengths of radiation at a desired power ratio. The radiation of two or more wavelengths is used to mix the wavelengths in a nonlinear optical medium to obtain radiation whose wavelength differs from those wavelengths amplified in the gain medium. In the most preferred embodiment, a laser source comprises a dispersive optical element disposed in an optical cavity having a single optical axis. The dispersing element causes different wavelengths of radiation to pass through the dispersing element in slightly different optical paths. The laser is tuned by moving or tilting the dispersing element relative to the axis of the cavity. In this way, a desired ratio of the average power of the individual wavelengths can be set. The ability to change the power ratio is important for simultaneously generating multiple wavelengths in a single gain medium, thereby preventing the excitation state from being attenuated by the dominant wavelength.
