abstract An ion transfer tube (30) for transporting ions from a first chamber (15) to a second chamber (18) of a mass spectrometer, the ion transfer tube (30) comprising: a first segment (66) and a second segment (69) connected to the first segment (66); the first segment (66) including an inlet end (27) open to the first chamber (15) and the second segment (69) including an outlet end (33) open to the second chamber (18) second chamber (18) is held at a reduced relative to the first chamber (15) pressure; wherein the first segment (66) has a plurality of separate, parallel channels (80) received in an outer sleeve (74), such that ions flowing through the first segment (66) are among the plurality of channels (80). are divided; the second segment (69) having a common channel (92) in fluid communication with the plurality of channels (80) of the first segment (66) and comprising at least a portion of the outer sleeve (74), the common channel (92 ) receives and transports a combined ion flux from the plurality of channels (80) in the first segment (66); and a heater assembly (36, 39, 42, 45) for heating at least a portion of the first segment (66) to vaporize residual solvent flowing through the ion transfer tube (30).
