titleOfInvention A method of reducing NOx emissions using a staggered silver / alumina catalyst system
abstract A method of converting the NOx content of the exhaust gas of a lean burn engine into nitrogen, the exhaust comprising NO and NO2, the process comprising: adding a hydrocarbon fuel component and / or a C1 to C3 alcohol to the exhaust gas; Contacting the exhaust gas with an upstream stage of a catalyst consisting essentially of alumina-supported silver so that NO is oxidized to NO2 and the hydrocarbon fuel component or C1 is contacted; and then contacting the exhaust gas with an adjacent but separate downstream stage of a catalyst such that the partially oxidized species react with NO 2 to reduce the NO 2 to nitrogen, the downstream stage consisting essentially of particles of alumina particles Y zeolites with exchanged alkali metal cations or particles of a Y zeolite with exchanged alkaline earth metal cations.
