titleOfInvention Polarizer for light and method of making one
abstract A polarizer according to the invention comprises two transparent bodies, each with a boundary surface which is coated with a polymer layer, on which light, the angle of incidence of which lies on the boundary surfaces within a certain angular interval, is not totally reflected on them. The two bodies are arranged with respect to one another such that the polymer layers lie opposite one another and are spaced apart from one another. The space between them is filled with a transparent liquid crystal which is in contact with both polymer layers, whereby the molecules of the liquid crystal are oriented in a preferred direction and the liquid crystal becomes birefringent in such a way that unpolarized light, the angle of incidence of which on one of the boundary surfaces within of the determined angular interval, is split at the interface between the polymer layer and the liquid crystal into two orthogonally polarized components, at least one of the components emerging as polarized light from the first or second body. The polymer layers are preferably produced from a hydrocarbon monomer by means of gas discharge.
