abstract The invention relates to a hydrophilic linker functionalized lipids containing a support group for bonding to a surface. Furthermore, the invention relates to self-assembled monolayers of lipids on substrates, in particular ultralatte gold substrates. The lipids and lipid monolayers or bilayers containing these lipids can be used to prepare biomimetic supported membrane systems. Optionally, these systems can be used after incorporation of functional molecules, such as membrane-associated proteins, for applications such as biological membrane model systems, screening methods, sensors, and bioelectronic devices such as biocomputers.
