abstract The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate or 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate-containing mixtures, wherein DOLLAR A i) isobutyraldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst is heated to a temperature (T1) in the range from 60 to 130 ° C. and DOLLAR A ii) the reaction mixture obtained is then heated to a temperature (T2) in the range from 140 to 250 ° C., giving a mixture which , 2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate contains.
