abstract Embodiments of the present invention provide a device for manipulating a substance, the device comprising one or more interdigitated electrode pairs, each electrode of each of the one or more interdigitated electrode pairs comprising a root and a plurality of branches, each extending from the root along a respective longitudinal axes, the plurality of branches of one electrode of the pair being interdigitated with the plurality of branches of the other electrode of the pair. The device further includes a dielectric layer disposed on the one or more interdigitated electrode pairs, the dielectric layer including one or more sublayers. The one or more interdigitated electrode pairs are selectively excitable to create an electric field on a top surface of the dielectric layer so that a substance on the top surface can be manipulated by the electric field. Adjacent branches of each of the one or more interdigitated electrode pairs are spaced from one another in a direction perpendicular to the respective longitudinal axis of one of the adjacent branches, and the spacing varies along a direction parallel to that respective longitudinal axis.
