This disclosure provides an engine start and shift control strategy for a hybrid vehicle. A system and method for starting an internal combustion engine and shifting a transmission is disclosed, wherein a controller may be operable to reduce a torque of an electric motor and a starter generator (ISG) in response to a command to shift the transmission and start the internal combustion engine Starting an internal combustion engine to operate. In response to the electric motor torque reaching zero, the controller may disengage a second clutch and then shift the transmission to a speed of a target gear ratio. In response to the completion of the shift, the controller may increase respective torques of the electric motor, the ISG and the internal combustion engine to drive a speed of the electric motor, the ISG and the internal combustion engine toward a target speed defined by the speed of the target gear. The controller may engage the second clutch in response to the speed of the electric motor reaching the target speed and engage a release clutch in response to the respective speeds of the ISG and the internal combustion engine reaching the target speed. |
