abstract A hardware-based traversal coprocessor accelerates tree traversal operations that look for intersections between primitives represented in a tree data structure and a ray. The primitives can include opaque and alpha triangles that are used when creating a virtual scene. The hardware-based traversal coprocessor is configured to determine primitives cut by the beam and to return intersection information to a streaming multiprocessor for further processing. The hardware-based traversal coprocessor is configured to omit reporting of one or more primitives identified as being cut by the beam. The omitted primitives include primitives that can be demonstrably omitted without any functional impact on the visualization of the virtual scene.
