abstract The present invention relates to a device with a tool holder and a tool cutting edge for turning an optically functional surface of a workpiece made of glass or glass ceramic with a device for generating, guiding and focusing a laser beam on a laser focus in the machining area of the workpiece and a method for turning a surface a workpiece made of glass or glass ceramic with a monocrystalline diamond for the production of an optically functional surface in which a processing area of the workpiece is heated with a laser beam. The invention relates in particular to machining a workpiece made of glass or glass ceramic for the ultra-precise production of optically functional surfaces, such as those required for lenses or mirrors, by means of machining with a geometrically defined cutting edge. The invention is characterized in that the tool cutting edge has a monocrystalline diamond and the device has an inert gas feed to the tool cutting edge and a temperature control device in order to set a temperature in the machining area below the transition temperature of the material of the workpiece and above the lower cooling point of the material of the workpiece.
